Great footwork is the foundation of excellent tennis. It's what allows you to reach difficult shots, maintain balance during rallies, and position yourself optimally for every stroke. Here are five proven footwork drills that will dramatically improve your court coverage.
1. The Ladder Drill
Using an agility ladder (or imaginary squares), practice quick feet movements. Focus on staying on your toes, keeping your knees slightly bent, and maintaining a forward-leaning posture. Start with basic in-and-out patterns, then progress to more complex sequences.
2. Cone Shuffle Drill
Place cones in a straight line about 3 feet apart. Shuffle sideways from cone to cone, touching each one while maintaining your tennis stance. This drill improves lateral movement and helps you stay low and balanced.
3. Star Pattern Movement
Start in the center of an imaginary star. Sprint to different points (forward, backward, diagonal) and return to center each time. This drill mimics the multi-directional movement required during points.
4. Split-Step Practice
The split-step is crucial for quick reaction. Practice hopping slightly and landing with both feet when your opponent is about to hit. From this position, you can move efficiently in any direction.
5. Court Sprint Intervals
Run from baseline to net and back, focusing on proper form rather than speed. Include side shuffles along the baseline and quick direction changes to simulate match conditions.
